(Zapotec Deity)COCIJO

Also known as COCIYO

The stormy Zapotec God of rain and thunder, but mainly lightning.

Cocijo was around long before Tlaloc or even Chaac and back in the day they liked value for their blood-letting and human sacrifice.

As well as being the chief deity of storms (Cocijo means lightning) he was their top creator God and created the sun, moon, stars, land, mountains, rivers, plants, animals, and pretty much everything else just from his breath. What had he been eating?!

Rumour has it there could have been four Cocijos, one for each cardinal direction, which would have eased the work-load a bit, and they are easy to spot - look for the guys with the stumpy snouts and snake's tongues, holding a bucket of water and lightning bolts. Did their moms never tell them that water and electricity don't mix?
