(Aztec Deity)MIXCOATL

Also known as CAMAXTLI, IZTACMIXCOATL

Aztec God of hunting and war. But how can you take a war God seriously when he's carrying a basket?

In true Aztec fashion - Gods becoming other Gods, impersonating other Gods and sleeping with other Gods, Mixcoatl should be called Mix-and-match-coatl. Godly confusion follows. Ready?

Mixcoatl was the ancient Chichimec God of war and warriors, aka Camaxtli, and also quite big with flint-fires and sorcery. When the Aztecs pummeled all and sundry into submission and elevated Huitzilopochtli to top war God they realised they had a vacancy for a God of hunting and Mixcoatl fitted the bill.

He's no ordinary deity and when you've been around as long as he has you learn a few things. Mixcoatl popped up as Red Tezcatlipoca and created a miracle of engineering known as the Cosmic Firedrill. This involved the spinning of heaven on its axis, and brought the very first fire to earth, a stroke of engineering genius that has never been repeated.

Rumours abound that he fathered Quetzalcoatl by Xochiquetzal but probably just the wind aspect Ehecatl, and besides old Tonacatecuhtli and Ometecuhtli are often heard shouting 'i'm the daddy!' which could mean they're claiming responsibility themselves - or possibly just boasting.

Mixcoatl definately sired the four hundred Centzon Huitznahua by Coatlicue, but not Huitzilopochtli, a ball of feathers is responsible for that one, with Ometecuhtli spotted plucking a Quetzal bird just before Coatlicue set off for temple cleaning duties. You see how confusing mythology can be?
