The old old God of fire, particularly the household variety. Xiuhtecuhtli quite literally kept the home fires burning.

With two calendars running in tandom the Aztecs managed to come up with a century that lasted fifty two years. Relieved that they had got their sums right and fearing the Gods would not renew their contract with mankind for the next century they held great banquets in the Gods honor.

During the festivities, party-goers drunk on God knows what would be randomly thrown onto a huge fire. Understandibly Xiuhtecuhtli the God of fire was the centre of their attentions and just before the point of death the 'volunteers' would be hauled from the flames and have their hearts ripped out as a gift to this old decrepid God.

Fire in the home was right at the top of the Aztecs list of priorities, without it there would be no cooking, heat, light or self sacrifice - the Old Old God needed to be appeased. Thankfully, with hearts and blood flowing freely Xiuhtecuhtli was only too happy to sign up for another fifty two years, which is just as well - without him the Aztec civilization's life fire would have been extinguished permanently, and Cortez would have had no-one to murder and rob!

In true Aztec mix-and-match fashion Xiuhtecuhtli is an aspect of Ometeotl the dual creator God, sometimes known as Huehueteotl the Old Old God of fire, or he could be Tonacatecutli. On top of that he might be married to Chalchiuhtlicue. Then again he might not.
