(Taino Spirit)HUPIA

Also known as OPIA, OP'A,

Taino death spirits.

Upon death the Hupias (spirits of the dead) leave the body and wisp away to live in Coaybay. They can assume many forms, including humans, and often take the form of a deceased loved one for some unscrupulous reason or another.

They are easily spotted as they don't appear to have mastered the art of re-creating facial features, in fact, they don't have faces at all. They don't have belly buttons either so if a long deceased family member turns up looking remarkably un-dead those are the things to check for.

Hupias sleep all day and only go out at night but you don't need to fear being eaten unless you happen to be guava which is their favourite chow. Once full of fruit they party like demons, singing and dancing the night away and are a tad on the sensitive side, often making nostalgic trips to their previous homes to snuggle-up to old partners. But be warned; if you try to embrace them they will disappear in a puff of smoke and if you happen to stumble upon one it's best to face it head on. They can smell fear and pooping your pants is a dead give-away. Sissies can expect to be driven insane or even become paralysed.
