(Greek Deity) ACHELOUS

Also known as AKHELOIOS

God of the the river Achelous. Son of Oceanos and Tethys and eldest of the Oceanid's butch brothers known as Potamoi.

Apart from being god of the biggest fresh-water river in Greece, and possibly fresh water in general, Achelous had an almighty set-to with Heracles. As always, the cause of this masculine tub-thumping was a woman, in this case Deianeira and, despite the Gods' constant shapeshifting, the son of Zeus beat him sensless.

Achelous lost a horn, had his ego severley battered, and mooched off to his underground springs to sulk. But he should have counted himself lucky instead of flooding rivers out of spite because pretty soon Heracles was dead thanks to the very prize they were fighting over. (See Deianeira)

Rumour has it the Sirens were born from his blood after this most embarressing defeat but, having done some digging, i can't rule out the possibility that they were just the result of good old fashioned sex between Achelous and Melpomene.
