(Greek Mortal) AJAX

Also known as AIAS

The Heroic son of King Telemon and Periboea. Ajax was the Prince of Salamis... that's the place, not the sausage.

Ajax was huge and a bit of a brawler to boot, and thought nothing of using a ships mast as a spear or chucking dirty great boulders around as if they were pebbles. This earned him a reputation as one of Greece's toughest cookies, second only to Achilles, but when the guy with the dodgy heel was eventually killed Ajax and his cousin Odysseus just couldn't agree on who deserved his Haphaestus made golden armour.

Both parties argued their case, the infinately more eloquent Odysseus got the nod and Ajax planned to get even. His brutal payback plot was foiled by Athena when she made him insane, only tempararily, but long enough for him to kill a field full of sheep and cattle, convinced they were his former comrades in arms.

Sanity restored and overcome with a fear of his own evil intentions he tried to skewer himself on a sword given to him by Hector. As if Athena hadn't caused enough embaressment, every time poor Ajax tried to kill himself the goddess turned his sword into a broadbow. This is a deadly weapon when you're using it to shoot arrows but no good at all for impaling yourself on and the sun was rising before Ajax managed to to stab himself in the armpit and die from his injuries.

Odysseus took this particularly badly - he was pretty much responsible for the whole sorry epsode after all - but a trip to Hades to kiss and make up backfired bigtime as the spirit of Ajax gave him the cold shoulder.
