(Greek Mortal) ALCESTIS

The daughter of King Pelias of Iolcus and Anaxibia, reknowned for her beauty and virtue.

Despite her loveliness Alcestis remained single for quite some time and was untouched by manly hands right up until Admetus arrived with Apollo. Booted from Olympus for killing the Cyclops, the god of healing was looking to heel his reputation by playing the good samaritan, and it's lucky he did. You need a God on your side to yoke a wild boar and a lion to appease your future father-in-law and claim the girl of your dreams.

With the knot tied, Apollo bid his fond farewells and payed a visit to the Fates armed with nine cases of the finest homebrew, then got them so drunk they agreed to let Admetus live beyond his time if he could find someone to die in his place.

Unfortunately, lying on his death bed, the only one willing to give their life so Admetus could live was his wife Alcestis, the sole reason for his lust for life in the first place. But this wonderful example of loving loyalty had plucked at Heracles heart strings prompting him to venture down into Hades, that and the fact he fancied his chances against the only foe not yet chalked off his 'to beat up' list — death.

Heracles' hunch was dead right and he easily smacked Thanatos senseless, rescued Alcestis and returned her to a revatilized husband.

Alcestis was one of the daughters who fell for Medea's cauldron of youth ruse and chopped up Pelias before they learned the spell for putting him back together. What an oversight.
