(Greek Deity) ALCYONE

Also known as HALCYONE
Class : Deity
Greek Goddess of : The Winds
Attributes : Unknown
Festival Days :
When in Rome : Unknown

Daughter of Aeolus and Aegiale, princess of the winds. Popular with sailors, Alcyon guards against the perils of rocks and rough weather.

Being happily married to Ceyx, son of the morning star, incited Hera's wrath (probably because her own marriage to Zeus was such a shambles) and she whipped up a ferocious sea storm to wreck Ceyx's ship and trash their relationship.

But such a strong bond is pretty much unbreakable, even in death, as Alcyone proved when her husbands ghost turned up with the bad news and she chucked herself into the sea to keep him company.

Ceyx and Alcyon were turned into a pair of kingfishers by Zeus and the romantics out there are more than welcome to believe this was a direct result of a heart string plucking. But, Zeus being Zeus, he probably did it to get on his wifes nerves.

A more sincere gesture came from Aeolus who was moved to tears and now forbids his winds to blow for a fourteen day spell every year (known as the Halcyon days) so his daughter can lay her eggs in a floating sea nest.

Just for the record i have no idea why Alcyon's days became 'H'alcyon days, and in actual fact Kingfishers prefer to lay their eggs in trees or burrows beside water, not on it ... so there.
