(Greek Deity) AMPHITRITE

Attributes :
Festival Days :
When in Rome : Salacia

Originally one of the Nymphy Nereids, Amphitrite became Mrs. Poseidon and Queen of the sea.

When Poseidon saw the happy-go-lucky daughter of Nereus and Doris frollicking amongst the waves he fell madly in lust, but she knocked back his advances and hid close to Atlas in the end of the world stream. All of the posing and posturing had scared her senseless and his reputation as a womanising swine did little to enhance his chances, but the crafty sea God came up trumps with the creation of an all singing, all dancing, never seen before creature called Delphin.

In no time at all it had tracked down the bashful virgin and did such a sterling job of getting her onside that as soon as they had been married Poseidon placed him amongst the stars as the Delphinus constellation.

Amphitrite was the victim of a smear campaign by later writers who painted a bit of a grim picture of the personification of the sea, linking her to all manner of wrathful events. They suggest Poseidon was paying a little too much attention to her cousin so she threw some dodgy herbs into a pool where the nymph used to bathe.

The results are well documented with Scylla becoming a barking mad sea monster with six heads and twelve feet, but i have it on good authority that this was the act of a jealous sorceress known as Circe who had a soft spot for Glaucus. You can't believe everything you read.
