When in Rome : Mars

The Son of Zeus and Hera. Greek God of War and one of the Twelve Olympians.

In total contrast to his sister Athena, who stood for honor and glory in battle but only if there wasn't a non-violent solution, Ares went in for the seedier side of war. He was escorted in his war wagon by Phobos (fear) and Deimos (terror) which should give you a good idea. Think chemical warefare, spies and betrayal.

Very few Gods liked him, in fact only three, who are probably just as unstable as he is, would have anything to do with him. Hades loved his violent outbursts simply because his kingdom grew by the day thanks to Ares nasty habit of starting wars, his howling mad sister Eris who was never shy of stirring up discord with her magic apples and often escorted him on to the battlefield, shrieking and baying for blood, and squeeze-to-be Aphrodite, who had a rather disturbing fascination with violence and found him so handsome, in a brutal kind of way, that she hopped right into his bed even though she was married to Haphaestus at the time. There's no accounting for taste.

Ares has been bettered and battered by his big sister twice in battle and was also captured by the sons of Aloeus and Iphimedeia. He was held prisoner in a giant jam jar by Otis and Ephialtes the Aloadae twins and was half dead by the time Hermes eventually rescued him. Did this brush with death change his demeanor? Not a jot. It was war for wars sake with Ares, there didn't need to be a reason, and with so many opportunities to incite warfare there was no time for a war God to rest on his laurels.

He was involved in the worlds first murder trial after killing Halirrhothius the son of Poseidon but got off on a technicality. Apart from Ares there were only two people present at the scene of the crime. One of them was dead and the other was his daughter Alclippe. Case dismissed.

The Olympians loved nothing more than a bit of argy-bargy but referred to Ares as a bloody butcher, and even his own parents, never ones to shy away from a bit of pain and suffering at someone elses expence, thought he was a little too passionate about violence and bloodshed and referred to him as the most hateful of gods. Enough said.
