(Greek Deity) CHARON

Also known as CHORON, CHORUN

The ferryman of the dead - Son of Erebus and Nyx.

A sulky old man carrying a double headed hammer and an oar, Charon will ferry you across the River Acheron to Hades on two conditions : 1. you are dead, and 2. you have the fare.

The price of the journey is one Obulous which must be placed under your tongue, which is strange enough, but i can think of worse places to put it. Now and again a toff would pay with a Danace which is a Persian coin worth rather more than the Greek Obolus, but i don't suppose it would get them there any quicker.

Your family also need to afford you the proper burial rights or you'll be wandering the styx for a hundred years and no-one seems to know if you can try again after this time.

Every once in a while mortals would find a way around his pretty stringent 'no living' policy, like the times Aeneas bribed him with the Cumeaen Sibils golden bough and Orpheus turned him into a sobbing wreck with songs of yester-year. Failing that, try the Heracles approach and intimidate him with your brute strength.
