CIRCE

Also known as KIRKE

Circe is Aeëtes sister and big on magic spells - especially the herbal variety, but her enchanting songs were known to cast spells on passing sailors too.

Landing at Aeaea, Odysseus sent a search party to explore the island and they were welcomed with open arms by Circe who royally wined them and dined them... and turned them into pigs.

This seems a strange way to get the captain on-side, but sure enough Odysseus came-a-looking and Circe thought she had her next lover within her grasp.

Glancing around her hall Odysseus couldn't help noticing that it looked more than a little like a farmyard and this is because Circe made a habit of turning ex-lovers and their associates into animals that most suited their personality. This should tell you all you need to know about her taste in men... and the habits the crew.

Fortunately, Hermes warned Odysseus about Circe in advance and gave him some magic herbs which rendered him immune to her trickery, but no magic in the world can guard against falling under the spell of lust and after returning his crew to mortal form they stayed on the island for more drinks and feasting.

Three years later, having fathered Telegonus, Odysseus returned to the sea with warnings of the perils he would encounter ringing in his ears and Circe, not the dwelling type, readied herself for the arrival of Glaucus.
