(Greek Mortal) DAMOCLES

An attendent at the royal court of the tyranical Dionysius of Syracuse, who thought the king was fortunate because of his wealth and lifestyle.

Damocles just wouldn't shut up about it, "your wealth" this... "the majesty of your rule" that... "the magnificence of your palace, there's never been anyone more fortunate" blah blah blah — there's only so much a king can take.

Dionysius had a plan that just might curb Damocles' enthusiasm.

A grand banquet was organised with the kings mouthy side-kick taking his place as guest of honour. He was dressed in the finest robes and adorned with the most expensive jewels, food and wine were flowing freely and Damocles was loving it.

"This is the life!" he thought to himself as he lay back on his silver and gold embroidered couch, then, all of a sudden he looked up and didn't feel fortunate anymore — there's nothing quite like a rather nasty looking sword suspended above your head by a single thread of horse hair to put things into perspective!

"Welcome to my world" cried Dionysius, "Fame? Yes. Wealth? Definately. Hunky, sought after and handsome to boot? Undoubtedly. But how can i be fortunate with a dirty great sword hanging over my head everyday ready to fall at any moment?"

Obviously the King was speaking metaphorically about the threat of war, of rival Kings, and those closer to home lurking in the shadows, but Damocles couldn't get back to his simpler life in the safety of the peasant block quick enough.
