(Olympian) DEMETER

Also known as AUXESIA, DEO, CHLOE, SITO
Greek Goddess of : Fertility, Harvests, Preserver of marriage, Sacred law
Attributes : Wheat-sheaf, Torch
Festival Days : Peoerosia
When in Rome : Ceres

The Goddess of fertility and crops, one of the twelve Olympians, and preserver of marriage and sacred law.

Having been the victim of a full-on stalking campaign from the horny old sea God Poseidon, she turned herself into a mare and mingled among the herd in a nearby field. Unfortunately, Poseidon knew a bit about horses, he actually invented them, so Demeter stood out like a sore thumb. It wasn't long before he took the form of a stallion and nobbled her.

She washed away her shame in the River Ladon and tried to palm the facts off as one of the Eleusinian Mysteries, apparently the details are not to be uttered outside of this most secretive club, but what the hell ... Arion and Despoena were the resulting offspring.

Her misery at the hands of horny Gods was doubled when her daughter Persephone was nabbed by Hades and dragged off to the underworld to be his queen.

Persephone travelled the entire world looking for her and completely neglected the whole Goddess of crops thing, plunging the world into perpetual winter during which time nothing would grow. Her wallop as Goddess of the seasons convinced her brother, Zeus, to go to Hades and have a little chat.

Persephone : "Hey, Zeus! I know you would get naked with all and sundry anytime and anywhere, but it's like this... would you rather have the sun on your back or the frost on your crack?
And we're talking ALL YEAR ROUND! Take your pick big man.
"

Zeus was on it in a jiffy and Hermes, the smoothest of smooth talkers, had no problem brokering a deal with Hades to let Persephone spend half of the year on earth. During this time Demeter would be happy, resulting in shining sun, flourishing crops and joy to the world. The other half was spent in Hades and plunged her into a state of total depression. A blanket of misery covered the world, crops wouldn't grow, farmers became skint and suicidal and counted the days until Persephone returned bringing warmer weather with her.
