(Greek Mortal) ODYSSEUS

King of Ithica, the son of Anticleia and Laertes who stole the show at the premier of Homer's Odyssey around 800 BC.

He was a bit of a clever-clogs, coming up with all of the most cunning plans, and was way too smart for Ajax who lost out on Achilles' golden armour when Odysseus out-talked him in a chat-off for the prize. This is no suprise when you take into account he was great-grandson of Hermes, a bit of a talker himself.

Odysseus had a soft spot for Helen of Troy, and he wasn't the only one, but once she chose Menelaus he suggested it may be prudent to get the unsuccesful suiters onside and have them swear an oath to defend the marriage.

In true god style, even though he wasn't a god, when Helen was taken by Paris and the King of Troy cried for help Odysseus went to extraordinary lengths to wriggle out of his own suggestion. He feigned insanity, ploughed his fields and sowed salt instead of grain but soon snapped out of it when Palamedes chucked his infant son in front of the plough.

Once in battle he fought like a demon and had a moment of genius which saw his invention, the Trojan horse, swing the war in the Greeks favour. His journey home took a whole decade and while seven of those were spent against his will with an over posessive nymph named Calypso the other three were filled with adventures, lotus eaters, one eyed giants and more calamities and misfortunes than you could shake a stick at.
