(Greek Mortal) PERSEUS

Heroic son of Zeus and Danae.

After a 'death by family member' prediction that oracles seemed so fond of, Acrisius locked his daughter Danae in a tower in a sly attempt to cheat fate and avoid death at the hands of his grandson. But a piddly little tower was never going to stop Zeus sowing his wild oats. He visited Danae in the form of a golden shower and nine months later Perseus was born.

Acrisius was mortified and chained Danae and her new born into a wooden box then threw them into the sea, but divine intervention saw them washed ashore on the island of Seriphos where they were found by Dictys and carried to the court of Polydectes.

Time passed and Polydectes became quite fond of Danae but there was no way he could make a move on her and risk getting on the wrong side of Perseus who had grown into a strapping hunk. He put his thinking head on and organised a grand banquet, hoping Perseus wouldn't be able to provide the customary lavish offerings, which proved absolutely right. Perseus didn't have two sheckles to rub together so he offered to bring the head of Medusa instead.

This was easier said than done but luckily Athena hated Medusa's guts after she did the wild thing with Poseidon in her temple, and gladly pointed Perseus in the right direction

A visit to the three old hags known as Graeae proved very fruitful as they filled him in on the where-abouts of the Gorgon sisters as well as giving him all manner of hints and tips. The hags only had a single tooth and one eye between them and weren't normally this helpful, but as Perseus had nobbled both of them they didn't really have much choice.

Several gifts from the gods, including Hermes winged sandals and Hades cap of invisibility were gratefully accepted as was a magic sack. This would prove particularly useful as one glance from Medusa, dead or alive, would scare anyone stiff, in a stone statue kind of way.

Sneakily looking at Medusa's reflection in his highly buffed shield Perseus scythed off her head, and though her blood curdling screams woke her two ugly sisters Perseus had slipped on Hades magic cap and was long gone.

On the way home Perseus used Medusa's head to great effect, rescuing Andromeda from the clutches of a nasty sea monster by turning it to stone, and while several innocents were killed during the mission at least Perseus gained a wife.

Old Acrisius thought he had managed to cheat fate as he sat amongst the crowd enjoying the Larissa games. This proved to be a gross error as he was accidently hit on the foot by a stray discus thrown by none other than Perseus, and he died on the spot. What are the chances?
