SCYLLA

Also known as SKYLLA

Monstrous daughter of Phorcys and Ceto, the beast of Messia with a nasty habit of devouring sailers six at a time.

As well as being barking mad she could also bark like a dog, but was once a beautiful nymph who tickled the fancy of Glaucus the sea god. The problem is, Circe quite fancied getting tickled by Glaucus herself so she threw some dodgy herbs into Scylla's bath, as well as a spanner in the works, and the previously harmless mortal became a nasty six headed monster. As if this wasn't bad enough she also grew twelve arms and had a mass of snapping snarling beasts where her legs should be.

In keeping with her fearsome new look, Scylla adopted a demeanor to match and took up residence on a huge rock in the narrow straight of Messina. Any sailor travelling this straight would be caught between the devil and the deep blue sea as opposite the twelve armed Scylla was the equally nasty Charybdis. Living under a huge fig tree the tide monster would cause serious whirlpools by gulping down the entire sea and anything on it three times a day then spewing it back up with terrible force.

Scylla wound Heracles up no end by snacking on the Geryon cattle that he needed for his tenth labour. Death ensued, followed by reincarnation courtesy of Phorcys.
