SINIS

Also known as PINE-BENDER

A Corinthian thief known as the Pinebender because of his rather unique method of robbery.

He would ask passers-by to help him bend two pine trees to the ground and suprisingly there were quite a few good samaritans out there (or he was just very persuasive) as there was never a shortage of volunteers.

Once the trees were bent he would tie one of his helper's wrists to each tree, then rob them blind. Obviously there wasn't a lot the poor victim could do but hold on until the strain became too much for them, at which point the trees would snap back to their natural upright position taking half a body with them!

This sounds like a very nasty way to go, but fear not.. Sinis got his cumuppance when he tried this old chestnut on Theseus who swiftly turned the tables and had Sinis holding on for dear life until nature and fatigue took their course.
