SPHINX

Nasty and viscous mix-and-match offspring of Typhon and Echidna. With a lions body, birds wings and hags face, her looks alone would kill the feint of heart, but she had a more crafty way of inflicting death.

Sent as a curse on Thebis by Hera, anyone wishing to gain entry to the city would have to correctly answer the following question otherwise they would be strangled :

'What goes on four legs in the morning, two at noon and three in the evening, but is stronger on two legs than three or four?'

The corpses strewn around the city gate would suggest not many, if any, had managed to give the correct answer, but Oedipus had it all worked out.

The Sphinx was so mortified when her riddle was solved that she took a nose dive from her perch straight into the ground and died on impact.

The answer? Man. In childhood he crawls on hands and knees, in manhood walks upright, and in old age walks with the aid of a stick. Simple when you think about it.
