(Hindu Deity)DAKSHAYANI

Also known as SATI

The gold skinned goddess of marital bliss, an attractive aspect of Devi and first consort of Shiva.

Dakshayani knocked back waves of advances from admiring kings and noble-folk when she entered adulthood, but against her fathers wishes she left the pampered life of the family palace and retired to the forest to worship a certain God of destruction.

Daksha didn't like Shiva much and was particularly put off by his cohort of demons and goblins. I don't suppose his hanging around in graveyards helped much, and when Dakshayani decided to marry him anyway daddy was not amused.

He organised a big shin dig for the Gods and invited everyone but the newly weds. He even erected a huge statue of Shiva and encouraged those present to throw food scraps at it. Have you ever had sandwich crusts and pickled onions thrown in your eyes? It's not very pleasant.

Dakshayani turned up anyway but the abuse thrown her absent husbands way was too much. Suicide was painless by comparison.

Shiva was furious that his wife had been forced into Hari-Kari and created Virabhadra and Mahakali from two locks of his hair. As they proceeded to destroy everyone at the party Shiva slung Dakshayani over his shoulders and did the dance of loons.

It was a pretty unorthodox dance with leaps and pirouhettes so severe that his beloved wife was broken into fifty one pieces that were scattered all over the world. But on the plus side the bits became Shakti Peethas, the top hot-spots of pilgrimage.

Regaining his senses Shiva brought all of the slain back to life. Even Daksha was revived and although his head was replaced with the head of a goat, many thought it a vast improvement on the old pig headed version.
