(Hindu Demon)HIRANYAKASHIPU

Also known as HIRANYAKASIPU

Son of Diti and Sage Kashyapa and infinately more powerful twin of Hiranyaksha. He's chief of the Daityas and a bit of a tyrant, really.

After hearing about his brothers death at the hands (or tusks) of Varaha and that the earth had been reclaimed from the cosmic ocean floor, Hiranyakashipu was seriously miffed.

After years of praying to Brahma he eventually earned the right to a boon which granted him imunity to harm or death from any man, deity, demi god or creature, at either night or daytime, inside or outside, on earth or in the sky or by any weapon. He thought he had pretty much covered every avenue.

He became so powerful he evicted Indra and became ruler of the universe, persecuting everyone who worshipped Vishnu. You can imagine how peeved he was to discover that his own son, Prahlad, was a follower of his twins killer.

His fury and frustration were compounded when his feeble son just would not die. It wasn't for lack of trying. He ordered his band of not so merry men , the Daityas to stab him, venomous serpents to bite him, elephants to trample and gore him and even his own sister to set fire to him, all to no avail.

You see, unbeknownst to him, Vishnu had whispered a 'protect the son from seriously obsessed pshycho father' spell and Prahad was immune to any kind of Hiranyakashipu induced harm.

"Vishnu is everywhere", proclaimed the son, "oh really?" asked Hiranyakashipu, kicking a stone pillar. At which point Vishnu jumped out in the form of Narashima and tore the demon to shreds.

It was twilight - neither day or night. It was on the threshold of a courtyard - neither inside or out. Narashima was neither man, deity or creature and the demon was lifted from the floor - neither on the earth or in the sky when he was killed by Narashima's claws - strictly speaking, not a weapon, but i'm sure Hiranyakashipu would disagree!

And that was the end of Jaya's first re-birth.
