Vahana (Vehicle) : Peacock

Hindu god of war Born from Lord Shiva's seed with the sole purpose of righting a terrible wrong.

Taraka had been praying hard. Hard enough to receive a boon of invincibility and wasted no time turfing the Gods out of heaven.

Indra was forced to part with Uchchaisravas his wonderful white horse, Great Sage Jamadagni had to give up his celestial cow, Kubera, the god of wealth, had to pay tribute to Taraka in the form of a thousand sea-horses and Vayu had to obey all of the wicked asura's commands. The sun couldn't shine and the moon was forced to work around the clock - something had to be done.

The Gods put their heads together to work out a way to exploit a loophole that had been cunningly inserted in Taraka's boon of invincibility by Brahma (You see, you should always read the small print) and decided that they needed to get Shiva married off so he could conceive a son. They re-incarnated Sati in the form of Parvati, in the hope of rousing a red blooded Gods red blood. Having drawn straws, Kama the God of love and desire was charged with the unenviable task of rousing Shiva from his deep meditation and self imposed celibacy at Mount Kailash. For days he pondered how he could disturb the God without incurring his wrath, eventually biting the bullet and shooting an arrow into Shivas chest. It was meant as an arrow of love .. but Kama's worst fears were realised when Shiva fixed him with a stare from his third eye and burned him to ashes. Oh well.

Shiva hadn't had a woman for so long his virginity had almost grown back and the potency of Kama's arrow of lust was beginning to take effect. Parvatti was throwing herself at him at every given opportunity and a red blooded God can only take so much, right? Parvatti thought 'my luck is in ' .. and she was right.
In no time at all they were married. The Gods rejoiced and rubbed their hands in anticipation of a swift return to their lovely comfy heaven that Taraka had kicked them out of. Years passed .. and still no son of Shiva!

"Whats going on?" asked one God,

"I don't know, maybe he's a jaffa?" said another

Agni was sent to get an update. Arriving at Mount Kailash he could see that all was not well. He would've loved to hang around and play marriage guidance counciller but time was of the essence. Spotting a bit of Shiva's seed he picked it up to carry back to the Godly lab for analysis, but halfway home became exhausted and took a noser into the banks of the river Ganges. Luckily the soil there is quite fertile and up sprang a baby boy. By an enormous coincidence the six pleiades were bathing there and overcome with maternal instinct stuck one of their boobs in each of Karttikeya's six mouthes - with so much sustenance he grew strong and fast.

Dressed in pure white robes with no uneccesary adornments as befits a warrior who was to replace Indra and Agni the original Gods of war, Karttikeya didn't even have time for a woman.
But that isn't a bad thing. With no 'have you tidied the garage, put the rubbish out, you don't love me anymore .. boo hoo' stuff to deal with, he was free to think manly thoughts of enemy destruction and warlike adventure. When it was time to stop thinking and start doing he was ready to go .. without washing the dishes if he wanted to - his six heads focused, twelve arms poised, swords, spears, bow and arrows at hand. Sat atop his Peacock vahana he rocked!

The Gods watched, fingers crossed as he marched into battle.

They need not have worried though. Taraka was tough alright, but not tough enough and Karttikeya destroyed him. Order was restored, the Gods left the forest where they had been hiding like little sissy chicken babies and returned to the comfort of their heavenly abode.
