KUNTI

Also known as PRITHA

Daughter of Surasena of the Yadu clan which made her Krishna's aunty through her sister Vasudeva.

Originally known as Pritha, she was adopted by King Kuntibhoja who couldn't have children but shortly after her arrival he was blessed with the pitter-patter of tiny feet. All of a sudden she was his luckiest lucky charm and he renamed her Kunti, though 'lady luck' was surely a more obvious choice.

She got a bit of luck herself after a visit by Sage Durvasa who was so impressed with the super polite Kunti and her feather light buns that he granted her five boons. These would guarantee her a child by any of the Gods and was a nice gesture even though she wasn't sterile the last time she looked. It was also a bold claim, sage or not, so she gave it a little go and in no time Surya popped up and left Karna on her doorstep. Unfortunately she hadn't read the small print and there was a no returns policy in place. Oops.

She went on to marry Pandu, who had accidently killed a Rishi mid-sex and was cursed to die if he so much as thought about getting his wives in the family way, so the boons would come in handy after all.

Kunti gave birth Yudhishtira by Yama, Bhima by Vayu and Arjuna by Indra, and being the thoughtful type gave her co-wife Madri the remaining boon so she could conceive Nakula and Sahadeva by the Ashvins. This made up the five swashbuckling Pandavas.

She wasn't paying due attention once again when Arjuna turned up all exited with his latest prize, won in an archery contest, and didn't even look up from the washing as she told him to share it with his brothers. It turned out to be Draupadi. Oops... again.
