(Hindu Deity)MATRIKAS

Also known as MATARA, MATRIS, THE GREAT MOTHERS
Attributes : Coming soon ...
Festival days : Coming soon too ...
Vahana (Vehicle) : --

The Seven Hindu Mothers. Baking, meeting for morning tea, having a good gossip, and blushing at the odd Anne Summers party were not exactly their thing.

In early Vedic beliefs the seven mothers weren't as mother-like as you might think, having all manner of bad habits. In fact they were considered really quite dangerous.

In no particular order of destructive motherly power the Matrikas are : Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Maheshvari, Indrani, Kumari, Varahi and Chamunda. They are the terrifying shakti, or female aspects, of the male Gods, said to represent the seven Pleiades, and were created to deal with Andhaka who was trying to steal Parvati.

They rally around Durga, the full-on battle goddess, and love nothing more than rolling their sleeves up to have a good scrap. This makes them particularly popular in Tibet and Southern India where demons are rife.

See Andhaka.
