Daughter and Consort of Brahma. Saraswati is one of the Tridevi, and Goddess of creative arts, music, speech and knowledge.

Most of the Gods and Goddess's major misfortunes arose from Saraswati's curses after she refused to play the good wife and arrived at a sacrificial get-together fashionably late.
Brahma was forced to take a second wife just for the occasion and Saraswati went ballistic.

Brahma was cursed to be worshipped only once a year, Indra to be defeated and expelled from Svarga, Vishnu to be reborn as a human ten times and have one of his wives humiliated and ravished. Shiva, Lakshami and Indrani too all felt her wrath, in fact the only major deity not cursed by name was Parvati.

But Brahma's new wife, the seemingly common milk maid Gayatri knew a bit of magic herself, and while she couldn't remove the curses completely she did manage to modify them a little and take some of the sting out.

According to ancient Legend the Vedas weren't written, Saraswati gave birth to them, which makes the mind boggle, and in Tibet she is known as Lha mo, the only Goddess amongst the wrathful and really quite scary Drag-Ched.
