Pronunciation : Coming soon ...

(Deity)SUSANO

Also known as SUSANO-O, SUZANOO, SUSA-NO-WO
In a nutshell ...
God of : The Ocean, Thunder Storms and Wind
Religion : Shinto
Attributes : coming soon ...

Shinto God of the Storm and Oceans. Also God of the winds which is quite fitting as he was born from Izanagi's nose.

Susano was devious and Amaterasu knew it. He always got the upperhand but she hoped to catch him off guard with an impromptu offspring creating contest. Surely she could win this time. He was a man, after all.

The Sun Goddess created three women from Susano's sword in the blink of an eye but Susano retaliated by creating five men from his sisters necklace. Damn. He had done it again.

In a fit of logic that only makes sense to Gods and women, Amaterasu claimed the men were hers because they were born of her necklace. Susano, always the bad loser, hurled a flayed pony at her loom killing an attendant in the process and a terrified Amaterasu hid herself away in a heavenly rock cave, depriving the world of sunlight.

Susano was booted out of Heaven by Izanagi and mooched around earth for a while before stumbling upon a weeping couple.

It turns out seven of their eight daughters had been devoured by the eight-headed serpent Yamata-no-Orochi and it was about to come for the eighth, Kushinada-hime. Accepting the very generous offer of their final daughters hand in marriage, Susano promptly turned her into a comb and hid her in his hair.

Building an enclosure with eight holes in it and placing a huge bowl of Sake on the other side of each hole, Susano sat and waited.

Sure enough the smell of free booze brought the dragon snooping and it wasn't long before he had a head through each hole guzzling down the Sake like it was going out of fashion. Drunk and sluggish, Susano seized the opportunity and cut off each of the dragons eight heads. Taking no chances he began to chop the body up into pieces and a sword fell out of the dragons tail. What are the chances?

A stunned Susano named it 'Ama-no-Murakumo-no-Tsurugi'
which means 'sword of the gathering clouds of Heaven.'

He gave it to his sister Amaterasu by way of apology and it found its way into the Japanese imperial family via Ninigi, the divine grandchild. Understandibly, as snappy as its name was, it was renamed Kusanagi.
