Alfhild was a bashful handmaid but no slouch with sword in hand. Goodness only knows who trained her.

Alfhild was saving herself for a special kind of guy, vowing to marry only a man who could best her in battle, so when King Alf came sniffing around she put on her shiny chainmail and sharpened her sword.

A viscous battle ensued with both going at it hammer and tongs, in a fighting sense. It was brutal, and while Alf didn't actually defeat the battling maiden he did prove her equal which was good enough for Alfhild. Maybe she was getting lonely so lowered her sights a bit.
