The Berserkirs were so fantastically ugly that the only things willing to marry them were female serpents, then along came Thor and hammered them to death. This didn't help their demeanor at all.

Going into battle stoked up on alcohol and mind altering substances made the Berserkirs, well, berserk. Clad in bear skins and under the special protection of Odin they were said to be immune to weapons and windmilled into battle against the odds with reckless abandon and scant regard for their own well-being.

Unfortunately, drug fuelled highs don't last forever and as the effects wore off so did Odin's protection. Drained and suffering from a serious comedown the Berserkirs were so weak that their capture was inevitable, but the trend was set.
