NINE

Not a God but a number.

The number nine has a great significance in Norse mythology but no-one seems to know why. And if they do know they're not telling.

Odin hung for nine days upside down from a branch of the world tree to clap eyes on nine rune spells. Aegir and Ran had nine daughters known as the Billow Maidens who were Heimdall's nine mothers. Every nine nights Draupnir would drop Odin a jackpot of gold rings. Yggdrasil links the nine Norse realms. Hermod rode for nine nights to retrieve Balder from Hel and at Ragnarok Thor will take nine paces from the lifeless carcass of Jormungand before dropping dead.

Any ideas?
