(Norse Place)UTGARDR

Giant stronghold where things aren't always as they seem.

With Asgard 2-0 down to the Utgardr, Thor stuck his head right into an ale horn and drank until he couldn't breathe. This was quite normal behaviour for the thunder God, but this time he was drinking for the team. Unfortunately, when he looked the mead had hardly gone down at all...

'Well, well, well" said Utgardr-loki, "i'd heard thor was a big drinker, maybe you're tired, go on my son... give it another go!"

So Thor did, and again he barely made a dent in the mead.

'Poor show!" said the giant, "Maybe you would be better suited to a different challenge. Perhaps you could try and lift my pet cat?" But for all his struggling Thor couldn't lift the thing clear of the ground. He did manage to lift a single paw at one point, but the host wasn't impressed.

"I've got to be honest Thor, you're a bit of a wimp! How about you wrestle Elli. She's 10,000 years old and about 6 stone wet through. I'll tell her to go easy on you!"

All the huffing and puffing in the world didn't help Thor take down the old hag. They grappled each other to a standstill and in the end Thor was wrestled down onto one knee.

Well, it was a white wash. But just like the other challenges these bouts weren't exactly fair as Utgardr-Loki explained once the travellers were safely outside...

"Ok Thor, it's time to come clean. You've been had, but don't feel bad, you faired remarkably well, all things considered."

Of course Thor thought U.L. was taking the piss and cocked his hammer, but the giant was quick to explain.

"The other end of that huge horn you were drinking from was actually stuck in the ocean, it's a miracle that the level went down at all, but it did, and you can see the tide marks at any beach.

The cat that you wrestled with was actually the Midgard Serpant, and everyone in the room, myself included, were absolutely astounded and petrified when you managed to lift one of its paws clear of the ground. If i knew you had such strength i would never have let you anywhere near my castle, never mind in it!"

But it is a true mark of Thors power that the old crone, who was actually old age itself, only managed to put Thor down onto one knee. Thor was furious, he'd had enough of these bloody trickster types but there was time for just one more illusion as he turned to get hammer-busy and the giant, his castle, everything, had just vanished into thin air. Poof. Imagine his frustration!

Oh well, plenty more giants to bash. See Prymr, Hrungnir, Geirrod ...
