(Norse creature) YMIR

Also known as AURGELMIR

The First of the Rime Giants created from droplets of melting frosty chaos as Niflheim met Muspelheim at Ginnungagap.

The same drops also created the cosmic cow Audumla who licked at the ice until she'd unearthed Buri the very first God.

As Ymir slept he was sprayed with stray sparks from the toasty Muspelheim and some very strange things began to occur. Firstly a six headed giant called Bergelmir grew from his sweaty feet, which is weird enough. But then Bolthorn and Bestla sprouted from his armpits.

Bestla married Borr and they had three offspring - Vili, Ve and Odin - who celebrated the occasion by killing their new grandad. They had no time to worry about family loyalty as they had a world to build, and being so huge Ymir was a veritable one stop DIY world building shop.

Smashing him into pieces they scratched their heads then chucked the bits into the void. Nothing was wasted. His flesh became the land, broken bones and teeth the hills and mountains. They made particularly creative use of his head with the skull becoming heaven, his brain the clouds and his eyebrows Midgard.

Ymir's blood created the oceans, and there was so much of it that the entire race of Rime Giants were drowned. Only Bergelmir survived because he was smart enough to build a boat, and he snook away to pastures new with his wife where he created a new breed of Jotunn.
